One of the most bloodstained parts of the world, the Khyber Pass has been the scene of conflict and unrest for thousands of years, from Alexander the Great's invasion of India to the US pursuit of the Taliban.
There is a line of demarcation in the barren plains of Central Asia between the steppes that spawned the ravaging hordes of Genghis Khan and Tamerlane, and the enlightened cultures that arose in the fertile valleys.
